Our Vision and Activities

Nuestra Vision y Actividades Iniciales

The goal of the partnership is to encourage effective adaptation by serving as an interim platform to catalyze action and foster communication among the various institutions and actors engaged in the effort to scale up adaptation and resilience around the world. Additional information can be found in the Adaptation Partnerhship Update from November 2011.

Scope of Activities

1. Rapid Review of Adaptation Action
As part of our effort to catalyze effective adaptation action, the Adaptation Partnership commissioned a review of planned and existing adaptation activities in 12 sub-regions across Asia and the Pacific, Africa, and Latin America and the Caribbean. These reviews provide an inventory of regional and country-level adaptation activities and a summary of key adaptation priorities, based on documents like the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change's National Adaptation Programs of Action and National Communications.  They also identify gaps and opportunities for scaling up and enhancing collaboration.  To access these documents, click here.  Links to the sub-regional reviews can be found under each regional heading.

2. Regional Outreach to Facilitate Participatory Action Planning and Knowledge Sharing
Through regional outreach workshops, we are convening governments, practitioners, and institutions involved in the scaling up of adaptation efforts to outline plans, highlight sectoral priorities and gaps, identify opportunities for enhanced cooperation, and share lessons learned. The rapid review will inform and be informed by this regional outreach. Key institutions involved in the adaptation effort, including national and local governments, development and finance institutions, technical institutions, and NGOs will contribute on the basis of their experience. Plans or projects that are ready for implementation and have broad sectoral or regional appeal may receive broader attention from the international community through this consultation process. This approach would both be faithful to the country-driven nature of adaptation efforts and would provide lessons on adaptation for a broader set of partners.

3. Community of Practice to Support Implementation and Learning
We will also foster adaptation actions by promoting the connection of practitioners and planners undertaking similar types of adaptation activities within given sectors and/or regions and the transfer adaptation knowledge. We envision using the regional element outlined above as an initial platform for beginning to build such communities, and will support tools and processes that enhance such support across regions. We envision exploring a range of tools and processes for developing such communities, including by providing support for web-based tools and sectoral and regional practice networks, and identifying and promoting opportunities for planners to learn from ongoing projects and policies.
